Webby Night: The Webby 5’s – An experience NOT to forget!
I hate to say this but I really don’t see the point of attending the event “Webby Night: The Webby 5’s” (by Webby Awards), last Thursday at Velvet Underground.
And the b*tching begins…
According to the invitation (which was not directed given to me – IZ was invited, I was just his guest), the event should have started at 7 to 7.30pm, with a total of 5 guest speakers – mrbrown (prominent Singapore Blogger), David-Michel Davies (Executive Director of the Webby Awards), Melvyn Lim (Ogilvy One), Graham Perkins (Elasticity), and Kelveen Soh (Yolk). However, with no reason given, it was delayed for roughly an hour or so.
When the event actually began (with many guests already left), we were informed that mrbrown was unable to attend and that he would be doing some kind of “speech” (in words I suppose) via Twitter instead. That obviously didn’t turn out well – had problems with getting the connection up.
The most deceptive part of all; while I was out of the compound to get some fresh air, I noticed that the signage had only four speaker’s names instead of the initial five. In other words, they probably already knew mrbrown would not be attending and had not mentioned this to the guest at all.
This is just my assumption but the whole “unable to get the connection up” might probably be part of the plan too? Argh.
Since the supposed “speech” by the first speaker didn’t go through, they moved on to the next speaker and so on so forth – which lasted up to five minutes or so? Most of what was said made absolutely no sense, with close to NO RELEVANCE to the Webby Awards at all. One speaker even made a racist remark against Malays – which was totally uncalled for.
I understand “creativity”, but insults aren’t part of a creativity movement – I’m pretty sure. Come to think of it, the “boos” from the background kinda reassured my understanding.
In conclusion, I’d have to say this is the most boring, ridiculous and absolutely POINTLESS event that I’ve attended, period.
I would agree with IZ that the sausages were the highlights of the event but I’m not too heart up on sausages so, pretty much nothing worked for me.
Oh wait, at least I had good company (Priss and IZ)!
PS: I’ll be uploading some images soon!

Graham Perkins Says:
HI Sabrina,
Sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy the Webby event and that the only highlight was the food!
Could you please elaborate on whether the racist comment you mention relates to my presentation. Thank you.
